Another controversy surrounds Prime Minister Trudeau; this time, a photo of him in brownface
September 19, 2019 – OTTAWA
TIME magazine released a picture of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wearing brownface at an “Arabian Nights” themed party in 2001. The Liberal leader apologized for the photo, and when asked by a reporter if this was the only time that he had dressed in brown or blackface, Trudeau admitted to singing the Jamaican folk song, “Day-O” and wearing blackface makeup in high school.
Global News released another video of Trudeau in what’s described as, ‘racist make up.’ The date of the video is not known.
NDP leader Jagmeet Singh responded to the image, addressing all people in Canada who face racism: “The kids who see this image, are going to think about all the times in their life that they were made fun of, that they were hurt, that they were hit, that they were insulted, that they were made to feel less because of who they are.” Singh told Canadians to reach out to their loved ones to let them know, “they are loved and celebrated for who they are.”
Conservative leader Andrew Scheer called the photos a, “lack of judgment and integrity.” Green Party leader Elizabeth May tweeted that she was, “deeply shocked by the racism shown in the photograph.”
