Tensions continue to mount between Canada and China over Huawei CFO, Meng Wanzhou’s extradition to the U.S.

Wanzhou has been under house arrest in Vancouver on request of the U.S. Department of Justice for allegedly violating sanctions against trade with Iran.

In at ‘tit for tat,’ retaliation, China has now imprisoned two Canadians – Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor and has lengthened Robert Schellenberg’s 15-year sentence for drug smuggling to the death penalty.

This isn’t a new strategy for China. 

In 2014, Julia and Kevin Garratt, authors of Two Tears on the Window, were held as pawns in China. This week on Context, the couple describe what it’s like to be imprisoned in China. 

China has a history of human rights violations and arbitrary detentions.
