World Refugee Day: Responding to world migration
“The number of people fleeing war, persecution, and conflict exceeded 70 million in 2018.” A shocking statistic from the UN on World Refugee Day, and a reality for those seeking safety in countries like Canada.
Earlier this year, Context looked at the global migration crisis.
“It’s important that we do not turn a blind eye to peoples’ suffering,” said Joanne Lui, international president for Doctors’ Without Borders.
“Someone who is desperately leaving for their life, or their future should not be criminalized for that. Nobody leaves their country because they have the choice. They do it because they have no choice. They leave because of famine, they leave because of political crisis, they leave because of war.”
